Verdict. A cheap way to track rankings and AI visibility for my newsletter. It’s also a good example of a product that ships its MCP server and skills as part of the product.
what it is
An open-source SEO suite built to be driven by agents over MCP. It covers keyword research, rank tracking, competitor insights, backlinks, site audits and AI visibility. The data comes from your own DataForSEO API key, so you pay per request instead of a subscription.
Along with the dashboard it ships an MCP server and prebuilt agent skills, so Claude Code can query the SEO data and run guided workflows directly. The repo has .claude/, .agents/, .opencode/ and a plugins/ directory in the tree.
Self-host on Docker or Cloudflare Workers. Cloudflare is recommended for anything public, and it works on the free plan. There’s also a hosted version at openseo.so for $10 a month.

- Rank tracking and AI-visibility monitoring at DataForSEO’s per-request cost, compared with $100+ a month for the incumbents.
- It’s open-core. The hosted service adds 28% to every DataForSEO request. Self-hosting avoids the markup. The README says this openly.
- The README’s DataForSEO link carries an affiliate parameter.
- Railway, Coolify and Dokploy aren’t recommended as deployment targets yet.
